Concrete & gunite pools

# Gunite pools built to the lot, not around it.

**A gunite pool is sprayed over a steel cage, so the shape is drawn for your yard rather than chosen from a mold — typically $135,000–200,000 installed in coastal NC, three to six months from dig to swim.** On a coastal lot that usually means a sloped or terraced site, a spa on the same system, or a footprint no shell will fit. The steel and the shotcrete are where that freedom is paid for.

## Where gunite earns the extra time

### What it’s good at

- **Any shape.** Vanishing edges, beach entries, sport bottoms, spas that share the pool wall.
- **Any depth.** Diving depth, tanning ledges and swim-outs on the same build.
- **Terrain.** Sloped lots, retaining walls and raised bond beams are structural, not add-ons.
- **Repairable.** A gunite shell can be cut, extended or reshaped years later.

### What it costs you

- **Time.** Three to six months, and weather moves the schedule.
- **Resurfacing.** Plaster is a five-figure job every 8–12 years. Budget for it from day one.
- **Chemistry.** A porous surface holds more chlorine demand than gelcoat.
- **Price spread.** The quote moves with shape, depth and finish in a way a shell quote does not.

Step by step

## How a gunite pool goes in on sandy soil

1. 01

   ### Survey & engineering

Flood elevation, setbacks, soil, and a structural plan for the water table.
2. 02

   ### Dig, steel & plumb

Excavation and shoring, rebar cage tied, plumbing pressure-tested before concrete.
3. 03

   ### Shotcrete & cure

Gunite sprayed and shaped, then water-cured for several days.
4. 04

   ### Tile, deck & finish

Waterline tile, coping, decking, then plaster, quartz or pebble and startup.

What it costs

## Gunite pricing in coastal NC

Ranges from completed coastal NC projects. Your number is fixed after a site visit, not before.

| Build | Installed | Timeline | What moves the number |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Gunite, standard | $135,000–200,000 | 3–6 months | Shape, depth, decking area, finish |
| Gunite with spa | $165,000–240,000 | 4–6 months | Shared equipment, spillover, heater sizing |
| Gunite, luxury | $200,000–325,000+ | 4–6 months | Vanishing edge, retaining walls, automation |
| Plaster replacement | $7,000–15,500 | 1–2 weeks | Recurring every 8–12 years |

Coastal sites add cost where groundwater needs dewatering or a lot needs shoring — usually $8,000–20,000.

## Comparing your options?

### Fiberglass pools

Faster and lower-maintenance, if a molded shape fits the yard.

[Compare fiberglass](https://www.sunrisepoolsinc.com/fiberglass-pools?hsLang=en)

### Plunge pools

Under 300 sq ft for narrow island and infill lots.

Common questions

## Gunite pool questions

How much does a gunite pool cost in coastal NC?

Most land between $135,000 and $200,000, with spa and luxury builds running higher.

Shape, depth, decking area and finish account for most of the spread. A shared spa typically adds $25,000–45,000.

How long does a gunite pool take?

Three to six months from excavation to swimming.

Shotcrete has to cure, and tile, coping and decking are sequential trades. Rain moves the schedule more than anything else.

How often does gunite need resurfacing?

Plaster typically lasts 8–12 years; quartz and pebble finishes last longer.

Salt systems and coastal water chemistry shorten that at the low end. It is a real recurring cost, and worth pricing before you choose gunite over fiberglass.

Can a gunite pool handle a high water table?

Yes, with a hydrostatic relief valve and a dewatering plan during construction.

The risk on the coast is not the finished pool — it is an empty one. We do not drain pools here without wellpoints running.
