Fiberglass pools

# Fiberglass pool installation, engineered for coastal soil.

**A fiberglass pool is a factory-molded shell set into an excavated, engineered base — typically $90,000–160,000 installed in coastal NC, swimming in six to twelve weeks.** On sandy soil with a shallow water table, the shell is the easy part; the base, the backfill and the hydrostatic plan are what decide whether it’s still level in ten years.

## Where fiberglass wins, and where it doesn’t

### What it’s good at

- **Fast.** Four to eight weeks against ten to sixteen for gunite.
- **Low upkeep.** Non-porous gelcoat means less chlorine and no algae in the surface.
- **No resurfacing.** Gunite plaster is a five-figure job every 8–12 years. Fiberglass isn’t.
- **Predictable price.** The shell is a known cost; there’s less to discover mid-build.

### What it isn’t

- **Limited shapes.** You choose from molds. Custom geometry means gunite.
- **Size ceiling.** Roughly 16 ft wide — the width a truck can legally haul.
- **Access matters.** A shell needs a path to the backyard. Tight lots may need a crane.
- **Groundwater is real.** An empty shell over a high water table will float without hydrostatic relief.

Step by step

## How we set a shell on a coastal lot

1. 01

   ### Site & elevation survey

Flood zone, septic setbacks, HOA architectural review, utility locates.
2. 02

   ### Permit & plan

County building and electrical. State plan review if the pool is public.
3. 03

   ### Excavation & dewatering

Shoring in sand; wellpoints if groundwater is within reach of the cut.
4. 04

   ### Base & set

Compacted gravel base, laser-leveled, shell craned or walked in.
5. 05

   ### Plumb & backfill

Engineered backfill in lifts, filling with water as it rises.
6. 06

   ### Equipment & electric

Pad elevated to flood spec. Coastal-rated heater and hardware.
7. 07

   ### Decking

Concrete, paver or travertine. Bonding grid inspected before pour.
8. 08

   ### Startup & handoff

Water balance, equipment walkthrough, warranty paperwork.

Common questions

## Fiberglass pool questions

How much does a fiberglass pool cost in coastal NC?

Most land between $90,000 and $160,000 turnkey.

Shell size, decking area and whether the site needs dewatering account for most of the spread. Dewatering or crane access typically adds $8,000–20,000.

Will a fiberglass pool float in a high water table?

Not if it’s installed with a hydrostatic relief valve and never drained without a plan.

Floating happens when an empty shell meets groundwater pressure — which is why we don’t drain pools here without wellpoints running.

How long do fiberglass pools last?

The shell carries a structural warranty measured in decades; gelcoat typically looks new for 15–20 years.

Coastal sun and salt affect the deck and the equipment long before they affect the shell.

Can a fiberglass pool be saltwater?

Yes, and it’s the better material for it — salt is harder on plaster and on metal than on gelcoat.

We still spec coastal-rated rails and hardware, because salt air does the rest of the work.
