Repair & diagnostics

Pool repair, on the coast, this week.

Most coastal pool failures come down to four things: a leak, a pump or heater at end of life, a salt cell that has stopped producing, or a surface that has gone. Salt air shortens equipment life here by years compared with inland. We diagnose before we quote, because replacing a pump that was not the problem is a common and expensive mistake.

What we fix, and how we find it

Common calls

  • Leaks. Pressure-tested and located, not guessed at.
  • Pumps & filters. Pentair, Hayward and Jandy, repaired or replaced.
  • Heaters. Gas and heat pump, including coastal corrosion failures.
  • Salt systems. Cell output tested before anything is replaced.

How we diagnose

  • Pressure test first. A leak gets located before a quote, not after a deck is cut.
  • Read the equipment. Pressure, flow and amperage tell you which component actually failed.
  • Check the bonding. Corroded bonding is behind more coastal equipment failures than people expect.
  • Quote the real fix. If the pump is fine and the impeller is clogged, that is what we say.

How a service call runs

From call to fixed

  1. 01

    Describe the symptom

What changed, when, and what you have already tried.

  2. 02

    On-site diagnosis

Pressure test, equipment readings, and a look at the bonding grid.

  3. 03

    Written quote

What failed, what it costs, and what will fail next if it is left.

  4. 04

    Repair & verify

Fixed, tested under load, and water rebalanced before we leave.

Typical repairs

What common repairs cost

Coastal NC ranges. Diagnosis is quoted separately and credited against the repair.

Symptom Likely cause Typical cost Turnaround
Losing water dailyPlumbing or fitting leak$450–3,8001–5 days
Pump loud or not primingBearings, impeller or seal$400–2,4001–3 days
Water will not heatHeater board, sensor or exchanger$550–4,8002–7 days
Chlorine low with salt systemCell at end of life$700–1,6001–3 days

Coastal equipment runs shorter lives than the manufacturer rating. A heater that lasts twelve years inland often gives seven or eight within a mile of the water.

Common questions

Pool repair questions

How do you find a leak without digging up the deck?

Pressure testing isolates which line is losing, then we locate the point on that line.

Digging before testing is how a small repair becomes a large one. We do not quote a dig until we know where it goes.

How fast can you get out?

Most service calls in our four-county area are scheduled within a few business days.

A pool that is green or losing water fast gets moved up. Tell us the symptom when you call.

Is it worth repairing an older heater?

If the exchanger is sound, usually yes. If the exchanger has corroded through, no.

On the coast the exchanger is what fails first. We will tell you which side of that line yours is on.

Do you service pools you did not build?

Yes, most of our service work is on pools built by someone else.

We will tell you what we find, including work the original builder did well.
